3 Tips to Prepare for Your Annual Women's Health Exam
Having a yearly well woman visit is one of the best things you can do to stay healthy. In addition to a physical exam, your visit includes screenings to help you avoid serious diseases. Here’s how to get ready for your next exam.

Having a well woman visit every year is an important way to stay healthy at every stage of your life. Yet, many women are nervous about their exams, especially if it’s been a while since their last exam or office visit.

At OB/GYN Associates of ConroeRichard Roberts, MD, helps patients in Conroe, Texas, get the important medical evaluations and screenings they need in a relaxed, comfortable environment. In this post, you’ll learn three things you can do to prepare for your exam ahead of time, so you feel confident and at ease during your visit.

Be prepared to give your full medical history

At the start of your visit, we will ask about your personal medical history, including questions about allergies, prior surgeries or hospitalizations, and any chronic diseases you may have. They’ll also ask about your family history to understand your personal risks for hereditary or genetic problems, like ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, breast cancer, or fibroids.

Bring a list of all the medications you take, and include any over-the-counter medicines you take on a regular basis, too. You should also list vitamins, minerals, or nutritional supplements if you use them, since these products can affect your health in different ways.

Finally, we’ll ask about any symptoms you may have, like pelvic pain, unusual vaginal bleeding, weight changes, vaginal dryness, and more. We will also want to know about your periods, including how often they occur and the last time you menstruated.

Be ready to openly discuss your sexual activity

Some women are embarrassed about discussing their sex life with their OB/GYN, but rest easy: Our team has experience managing all types of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and other sex-related concerns. In fact, your OB/GYN is a great resource for information that can help you stay healthy and enjoy sex more, at every stage of life.

Your exam is also a great time to discuss your current method of birth control and to learn about other methods that might be a better fit for your lifestyle. If you plan to become pregnant in the near future, Dr. Roberts can provide you with lifestyle tips and other guidance to help you get healthy before you conceive.

Make a few changes to your personal care

Avoid using any vaginal products, like douches, washes, or deodorants, for 48 hours before your appointment. You should avoid sex during that time, too, since semen could interfere with your Pap test results.

On the day of your exam, wear comfortable clothing that’s easy to take off and put on. This can be especially helpful during the pelvic exam and breast exam.

It’s also a good idea to schedule your visit on a day when you’re not menstruating. Finally, making a list of questions and concerns to discuss during your appointment ensures you won’t forget anything.
